icelandic
to narrow, to taper, to become thinner
a proposal for a ski cabin in central iceland. the building accommodates a warming area, changing rooms, a viewing deck, an equipment tuning area, storage, and parking for a snow machine. along is length, the building tapers. at one end, the facade is composed of a single door for people. at the other end, the facade is composed of an overhead door. the thickening of the plan and the consistent roof pitch means that the building interior has a ceiling height which also transitions along the length to accomodate the human body on one end and the snow machine on the other. the building is constructed using a series of similar wood gables which engage with a series of cylindrical metal panels along the facades. along the exterior, the panels are the exact width of an uncut “stock” galvanized steel sheet that reference the geothermal pipes which mark the icelandic landscape. along the interior, the curved wall, lined in wood, makes space for benches, a fireplace, changing stalls, and storage. the building is divided in two halfs with a woolen curtain.
