an urban platform harvard gsd
instructor: alfredo thiermann
An urban sport shed is imagined for the DeFilippo Playground in Boston’s North End. The chosen site is an open triangular lot in the otherwise highly dense mid-rise neighborhood. The upper corner is directly opposite Copp’s Hill burial ground, forty feet above the lower corner. The sport shed is composed of a series of deep, long-span trusses which house interior programs and shelter open sport courts below. This urban platform is entered at-grade from the topmost corner and creates an elevated space for sport and community gathering, offering new vistas over the North End rooftops toward downtown Boston. A slender masonry tower houses additional program and separates the upper exterior program. An open triangular area is a scaled version of the original open space.
